What a Lisbon Boat Trip Costs – With Every Surcharge Counted

Lisbon has 122 river trips on sale. The cheapest is €15, the middle of the market is €40, and the most expensive is a private yacht at €750. Between the first two numbers sit almost every boat a visitor actually books – and a handful of charges that are not in the headline price.
None of them is large. Together, on a family of four, they are the difference between one boat trip and two.
The shape of the market

Two things worth reading out of that table. The median is €40, but the most-booked boat on the river is €21 – the sunset party cruise, with nearly 14,000 reviews. Popularity in this category runs well below the middle of the price range.
And €15 really is the floor for a boat. Our site-wide “from” figure of €1.50 belongs to a walking tour through Alfama, not to anything that floats. The three cheapest river tickets are a 45-minute express cruise, a sightseeing boat with a hop-on hop-off option, and the Tagus cruise with welcome drink – all at €15.
The surcharges, named
A €1.30 boarding tax, per passenger, at check-in. Stern Wind Cruises charges it on the sunset party cruise and on the swim-stop cruise, and both listings say so in writing. It is not hidden, it is simply not in the price you compared. Bring coins or a card to the ticket booth.
€15 per ticket to move your booking late. The same operator allows free changes up to 24 hours before departure, and after that charges a €15 rebooking fee per ticket, payable at check-in. Four tickets, one changed evening, €60 – four times the boarding tax for the whole family.
Headphones, on the boats where the guide is an app. The two Blue Cruises boats put the commentary in an app: the €15 river cruise asks you in so many words to bring your own headphones, and on the €28 sunset cruise headphones sit under not included. Without earphones you have a boat ride and no commentary, and that is a real part of what you thought you were paying €15 for.
Everything at the bar, because your own is banned. On those same boats you may not bring food or drink aboard. One drink is included; the rest is bought on board at the operator’s prices. That is not a scandal – it is why the bar exists – but a two-hour evening for two people rarely ends at the included glass.
The child who is free but still needs a ticket. One sailing operator requires that infants and children are always named in the booking, because they count towards the boat’s maximum occupancy. Which ages it charges how is in its booking form – we will not quote a figure that is not stated there. Leave the toddler off the booking and the boat may be full when you arrive. Another operator writes its rule out in full: children of all ages, including babies, require a ticket, and the price is the same for every age group. On that operator’s €37 sailing boat, a baby costs €37.
Nothing back for missing the boat. No-shows and late arrivals get no refund on several of these boats – at best a reschedule. With ticket exchange, queues and boarding closing ten minutes before departure, that is a genuine cost risk and the cheapest one to avoid.
What an evening on the water really comes to
Two people, sunset, nothing extravagant, using the real numbers above:

The cheap evening is genuinely cheap, and the reason is not a trick: it is a big boat with a DJ, a full deck, an open bar for two hours, and under-18s listed by the operator as unsuitable. The comfortable evening is shorter, calmer, refundable and has a restroom. What separates them is not €25 of value – it is two different evenings.
Where the price stops meaning what you think
“From” is a floor, not a fare. Several listings show a duration range – 2 to 4 hours on one party boat – because the page sells more than one option. The €21 is the shortest of them.
Free cancellation is worth money. Most of these boats refund in full up to 24 hours before. One two-hour sunset cruise at €28 is non-refundable – and it is not the cheapest of its length: another two-hour boat costs €20 and cancels free up to 24 hours before. There is no discount here for the missing flexibility. If your plans are firm you can live with that; if they are not, read that line before you click.
The cheapest boat is the one that fills. Small sailing boats state that they may be cancelled if a minimum number of travellers is not reached – with a full refund or another date. Big boats reserve the same right: the three-hour swim-stop boat runs on speedboats in the open sea between October and May if too few people book, and a catamaran with more than 3,500 reviews states outright that it may reschedule or cancel. You are paying for predictability as well as for a hull.
Private stops being absurd sooner than it looks. Twenty-six river offers start at €80 or more, which reads as a different league – until you divide. For four adults comparing €35 tickets, the arithmetic of a whole boat closes faster than most people expect.
Three ways to spend less without a worse trip
- Book the daytime version of the same boat. Sunset is the premium hour on this river, and several operators run the identical route earlier for less.
- Take your own earphones and eat afterwards. Two items, no cost, and they remove the two most common disappointments in the reviews.
- Count the tax and the taxi before comparing tickets. A €15 boat at a dock across town with a €1.30 tax is not cheaper than an €18 boat you can walk to – and the three departure zones are eight kilometres apart.
Before you pick a price, pick a format
Cost is the last question, not the first. Which boat format is meant for whom is where this decision actually starts; the sailing boats and catamarans sit at the top end of the ratings and are the least predictable; and the included drink, which looks like the price difference, mostly is not.
If your evening is a sunset, the durations and the boarding queue matter more than €5. If the weather is uncertain, so does which cancellation clause you booked. And with children aboard, the ticket rules above are only half the story – the rest is in the age limits and on-board equipment.
