Honest answers to the questions travellers ask us most.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is Sintra worth a guided day trip, or is it better to take the train yourself?

The suburban train from Rossio to Sintra runs about every 20 minutes, takes 40 minutes, and costs €2.45 one way – cheaper and more flexible than any tour. A guided day trip covering Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, Cape Roca, and Cascais takes 9 to 9.5 hours, but it handles tickets and logistics for you. Short on time or patience for planning? Go guided.

Do you need to book Pena Palace tickets in advance?

Yes. Pena Palace requires a timed-entry ticket with half-hour arrival slots, and in summer these sell out days ahead. Adults pay €20 for the park and palace combined (2026 price). Once you're inside, you can stay as long as you like – only the entry slot itself is time-limited, so book that slot early.

Does Lisbon have a beach?

No, the city itself has no beach. Carcavelos is reachable by suburban train from Cais do Sodré in 25 minutes. For Costa da Caparica, take the ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas (10 minutes) plus a bus, 45 to 60 minutes total, or the direct bus 3710 from Areeiro (55 minutes). Note: Rossio station only serves Sintra; Cais do Sodré only serves Cascais and Estoril.

What are the chances of seeing dolphins?

The Sado estuary near Setúbal, about 40 to 45 minutes' drive south of Lisbon, is home to Portugal's only resident group of bottlenose dolphins – roughly 30 animals, monitored by ICNF since 1981. Tours last two to three hours. No one can honestly quote you sighting odds, though: these are wild animals, and a sighting can never be guaranteed.

How far in advance should I book?

For timed-entry tickets like Pena Palace, as early as possible – see above. For most other tours, booking early costs nothing extra, since almost everything offers free cancellation up to 24 hours beforehand. There are no reliable occupancy figures for individual dates, so when in doubt, build in a few days of buffer.

Is the Lisboa Card worth it?

With 18,428 reviews, it's the second most-booked listing in our range, priced at €31 for 24 hours and covering free public transport plus entry to several museums. It pays off mainly if you combine several paid sights in one day – Jerónimos Monastery alone costs €18, Belém Tower €15. Planning just one or two stops? You may do better without it.

Do you need a car?

Not for the city itself: narrow old-town streets, expensive parking, steep hills, and suburban trains that reach Sintra and Cascais comfortably. The airport sits just 7 km from the centre, inside the city area. A rental car pays off more for the surrounding region – Alentejo, Arrábida, Óbidos – where train connections thin out.
