A Tagus Trip in Wind: When It Gets Cancelled, and What You Get Back

Lisbon sits where a wide estuary meets the Atlantic, and from May to September the west coast has a characteristic wind with a name. The nortada blows from the north or northwest along mainland Portugal’s west coast and typically reaches its strongest intensity in the afternoon.

The name of the wind alone does not tell you whether your cruise will sail. Wind and sea conditions can affect the route, the vessel and whether a trip goes ahead; passenger numbers can also trigger changes. And the clause that governs all of that is not the weather forecast. It is the sentence on your booking page.

The sunset party cruise: year-round operation

Stern Wind Cruises, which runs the sunset party cruise, states the position in one line: tours run year-round and are only cancelled if weather or sea conditions are unsafe.

The same operator also warns that routes, schedules, or vessels may change because of weather, sea conditions or minimum capacity. Those are possible outcomes to allow for when planning. Check any message about a changed route, departure time or vessel before travelling to the meeting point.

The sunset cruise with welcome drink and snacks is currently unavailable; its cancellation and notification terms cannot be verified.

One substitution clause deserves its own paragraph, because it changes the trip rather than the timetable. On the swim-stop cruise, the operator writes that from October to May, if the minimum number of passengers is not reached, the tour may run on speedboats along the Atlantic coast in the open sea – where, they add, the chance of seeing dolphins is greater. A calm river cruise can therefore become an open-water speedboat trip. For some people that is an upgrade. The swim-stop cruise is explicitly unsuitable for people prone to seasickness or motion sickness, pregnant women, people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users. If travelling with children, confirm the planned vessel and route before booking during the October–May substitution period.

Saildreams: another date or a full refund

Saildreams, on the sailboat sunset tour out of Doca de Alcântara, states two separate conditions, each with the same remedy:

• this experience requires good weather. If it is cancelled due to poor weather, you will be offered a different date or a full refund
• this experience requires a minimum number of travellers. If it is cancelled because the minimum is not met, you will be offered a different date or experience, or a full refund

That boat carries a maximum of ten and is listed as unsuitable for wheelchair users. Sailing with Sal simply says the tour can be cancelled due to weather conditions. The sunset catamaran from Sardinha do Tejo says in case of bad weather, the tour may be rescheduled or cancelled – and, separately, the same if the minimum passenger number is not reached. It is listed as unsuitable for wheelchair users.

Read those conditions boat by boat. Picking a boat without reading its own clause is the mistake.

What the wind does when nothing is cancelled

The most honest line on the subject comes from WaterScenery, on the sailing tour on the Tagus:

The itinerary of the tour may be changed as per tide and wind conditions, this is decided by your crew on the day of the tour

Two things follow from it. First, both tide and wind can affect this tour’s itinerary. Second, the decision belongs to the crew on the day, so the itinerary on the booking page is a description of intent, not a promise.

The same company also notes that your boat will be either a sailing yacht carrying 10 to 12 or a sailing catamaran carrying 12 to 14, and that groups are split according to availability. If being on one boat together matters, ask the operator to confirm that before booking.

And the sunset itself carries no guarantee. White Fin Tours writes it plainly for its sunset option: depending on the weather conditions on the day, views of the sun setting cannot always be guaranteed. A sunset booking cannot guarantee a clear sky. The city from the water is what you are buying.

The cancellation that costs you money is your own

Here is where people actually lose euros, and it has nothing to do with wind.

Free cancellation is the norm, but not the rule. Most of these boats let you cancel up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund. The Tagus sunset tour with snacks is listed as non-refundable.

On the sunset party cruise, late changes carry a fee. For that party cruise, Stern Wind allows free changes through GetYourGuide up to 24 hours before the activity, and after that charges a €15 rebooking fee per ticket, paid at check-in.

A no-show is not a weather cancellation. The catamaran operator states that in the event of no-shows or delays no refund will be given, and only a reschedule is possible. Late is late, whatever the sky is doing.

Give them a phone number that works. One operator asks for a working number in case they need to reach you; Stern Wind says that if changes occur, their team will contact you by WhatsApp or email using the details on the booking. A cancellation notice you never receive is, from your side, identical to a boat that left without you.

What to actually do about the weather

• Book the small boat a few days before the end of your stay, not on your last evening. If it is cancelled for wind or numbers, you want a spare day for the rescheduled date to be worth more than a refund.
• Put a jacket in the bag regardless of the forecast. Several of the sailing operators recommend an extra warm layer for the time on the water.
• Check operating terms as well as the forecast. Year-round operation does not guarantee that a particular departure, route or vessel will go ahead unchanged.
• Separate an operator cancellation from your own change of plans. Saildreams offers the stated alternatives when weather or passenger numbers cause a cancellation; the party cruise’s €15 fee applies to your late rebooking.
