A Tagus Cruise with a Welcome Drink: What Is Actually in the Price

Many boat listings in Lisbon put a drink in the title. “With welcome drink.” “With a glass of Portuguese wine.” “With drinks and snacks.” “With open bar.” They sound like a ladder – pay more, drink more – and they are not one. At €19, the 90-minute party cruise offers an open bar of white wine, beer, sangria and soft drinks, with a €1.30 boarding tax per passenger payable at check-in. At €29.17, the two-hour Blue Cruises sunset tour offers one drink and a selection of snacks.

The word to read carefully is the small one. A welcome drink usually means one included drink; the available choices depend on the tour. Here is what that looks like on the Blue Cruises sightseeing trip, in the operator’s own words.

The Tagus River cruise with welcome drink from Blue Cruises – €19, 4.3 stars across 6,665 reviews – lists exactly this as included:

• the river cruise itself
• audio commentary through the operator’s own app, with a note to bring your own headphones
• one complimentary drink from the daily selection
• an on-board bar with snacks, drinks and cocktails available for purchase

Three of those four lines are worth a second reading.

“From the daily selection” is the part people get wrong. Check the available choices if a particular drink matters to you. Your included drink comes from that day’s selection. If you have a specific wine in mind, ask whether it is available and whether it is part of the included selection.

“Bring your own headphones” is a practical detail to act on before boarding. The commentary lives in an app on your phone. Bring earphones so you can listen comfortably.

And the boat states that food and drinks are not allowed on board – your own, that is. The bar is the only supply line. Both Blue Cruises listings state that guests cannot bring their own food or drinks aboard. Food is available to buy at the onboard bar. Check the booking page for any transfer arrangements; the listed meeting point is Estação Fluvial Sul e Sueste. Arrange your journey to the meeting point unless a transfer has been explicitly confirmed for your booking.

Two more practical notes from the same listing. Sundeck access is limited to the first 52 guests, corresponding to its permitted seats – a later boarding position does not guarantee access to that deck. And the listing gives the duration as 1 hour 30 minutes while the description says 1 hour 40; confirm the duration of your departure before making onward plans. Boarding is open for 20 minutes from the stated time, at the Estação Fluvial Sul e Sueste on Avenida Infante Dom Henrique.

The drinks are not a price ladder

Read the right-hand column against the middle one. Compare the stated allowance, not a supposed price ladder. Blue Cruises specifies one drink on its welcome-drink trip at €19; Sailing with Sal lists two drinks on its two-hour sailing at €39. Compare duration, group size, snacks and atmosphere separately rather than assuming a higher price buys more drinks.

And then there is the boat that breaks the pattern entirely. The sunset party cruise costs €19 for 90 minutes with an open bar – white wine, beer, sangria and soft drinks – plus the €1.30 boarding tax per passenger at check-in. That is a different drinks allowance from a single welcome drink. What you choose with it is the atmosphere: a DJ and a party cruise. The operator states that children under 18 are not suitable for this boat, and also excludes pregnant women, people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users. That is the trade, and it is a real one.

“Bar” in the title is not a drink in the price

The landmarks cruise with audio guide and bar is currently unavailable, so its drink allowance and onboard facilities cannot be verified. Do not infer a complimentary drink from the word bar.

If accessibility matters, ask the operator to confirm the arrangements for your booking before you rely on them, including the boarding point and allocated boat.

Three conditions to check alongside the drink

• Check the open-bar menu and timing for your selected tour. Do not assume that every drink sold on board belongs to the included selection.
• A boarding tax is not a drink, but it is a euro. The party and swim-stop cruises from Stern Wind Cruises charge €1.30 per passenger at check-in, on top of the ticket.
• Separate operator cancellations from late arrival. Some sunset boats may reschedule or cancel for weather or low passenger numbers. The Sardinha do Tejo catamaran states that a no-show or delay receives no refund, with rescheduling to another date the available option.

When the drink should not decide

If you are on the river for the view, book the hour and the hull and let the drink be whatever it is. A welcome drink is not worth choosing a boat that does not suit your plans. If you are travelling with children, the drink is doubly irrelevant and the age rules and on-board equipment are the only list that matters.
