Where Lisbon's Boats Actually Leave From: Terreiro do Paço, the Docks, or Belém

Lisbon’s river tours do not leave from one place. The departures covered here fall into three broad areas, with several distinct docks and meeting points. Plan the journey to your exact dock in advance, allowing time for check-in and any ticket exchange.

Worse, the zone is not predictable from the product. Two boats from the same operator, both sold as sunset cruises, leave from two different docks. So this article is not a substitute for reading your ticket – it is the map that makes the address on your ticket mean something.

Zone 1 · The river terminal by Praça do Comércio

The two Blue Cruises trips and Stern Wind’s swim-stop cruise list Estação Fluvial Sul e Sueste, Avenida Infante Dom Henrique 1B, by Praça do Comércio.

Look for Estação Fluvial Sul e Sueste, the sightseeing river station by Praça do Comércio; use the operator’s exact meeting instructions to find the right ticket office. The address on these booking pages is Av. Infante Dom Henrique 1B, 1100-016 Lisboa.

Check the listings individually:

• the Tagus river cruise with welcome drink and the sunset tour with snacks, both from Blue Cruises
• the sunset cruise with welcome drink and snacks and the landmarks cruise with audio guide and bar are currently unavailable; their departure details cannot be verified
• Stern Wind Cruises’ swim-stop cruise lists Estação Fluvial Sul e Sueste; its sunset party cruise with DJ and open bar has two meeting locations, depending on the option selected

Getting there is the easy part of this whole article. The metro station is Terreiro do Paço on the Blue line, in the Praça do Comércio area itself; check the walking route from your chosen exit to the terminal.

Getting inside is where people lose time. For the Blue Cruises welcome-drink cruise, exchange your voucher for a ticket on the booked date. For the sunset snacks cruise, follow the instruction to meet at the ticket office.

The timings stated for the relevant products:

• boarding lasts 20 minutes, starting at the time stated on the booking (Blue Cruises welcome-drink cruise)
• arrive at the ticket booth 30 to 40 minutes before departure to avoid queues (Stern Wind sunset party cruise; use the meeting location for your selected option)

One practical note if you are boarding on a travel day: large suitcases cannot be stored on Stern Wind’s sunset party cruise. Stern Wind points to the paid luggage lockers around Cais do Sodré and Terreiro do Paço instead. Small backpacks are fine.

Zone 2 · Santo Amaro, Alcântara and Rocha Conde de Óbidos

These departures use separate docks west of the centre, from Santo Amaro to Alcântara and Rocha Conde de Óbidos. Check the named dock, gate and berth as carefully as you would a terminal ticket office.

Addresses you will see on booking pages, all within this strip:

• Cais Rocha Conde de Óbidos, 1350-352 Lisboa – the same company’s historic Barco EVORA

Note the first two lines. One operator, two sunset boats, two separate docks. If you booked “the sunset boat from Sardinha do Tejo” and navigate from memory, you have a coin-flip.

The Cascais line from Cais do Sodré serves Santos, Alcântara-Mar and Belém; choose your stop after checking the route to the exact dock. Use the dock name, gate and map pin in your confirmation to plan the final walk; the postcode alone is not enough to find the boat.

Zone 3 · Belém

The two sailing listings below start at Doca do Bom Sucesso on the Belém waterfront.

The sailing tour on the Tagus from WaterScenery and the 1 or 2-hour cruise along the Tagus from Taguscruises both list Taguscruises Boat Tours & Yacht Charter, Doca do Bom Sucesso, Avenida de Brasília, 1400-038 Lisboa. Use the exact boarding instructions in your confirmation to find the boat.

The station is Belém, one stop beyond Alcântara-Mar on the same Cascais line out of Cais do Sodré. If Belém is on your day’s plan anyway – the monastery, the tower, the pastéis – a boat from this zone saves you a cross-town trip and puts you where you already are.

The three questions worth asking before you book

Which address is on my ticket? Not the operator’s name, not the district – the street line. All three zones are on the Tagus, all three say “Lisbon”, and only one of them is yours.

How much time do I need before departure? Take the operator’s own number and add the ticket exchange. The sunset catamaran from Sardinha do Tejo states that no-shows and late arrivals get no refund; only rescheduling to another date is possible. Check the terms for your own cruise.

Am I coming from the centre or from the west? Compare the route from your accommodation to the exact meeting point, whether you plan to walk or use public transport. If your day ends in Belém, a boat from Belém is the shorter evening.
